Promoting Active Schools Through Sport

Our school sports initiatives continue to provide students with exciting opportunities to stay active, build confidence, and develop teamwork skills in a fun and inclusive environment. Through programmes in Gaelic football, hurling, tag rugby and swimming pupils are encouraged to participate, learn new skills, and enjoy the benefits of regular physical activity.

All pupils from Junior Infants – 6th Class have the opportunity to participate in regular training sessions with the Games Promotion Officer (GPO) from St Rynaghs GAA skills and the Youth Development Officer from West Offaly Lions.

Gaelic Games

Gaelic football and hurling sessions help students connect with Gaelic Games while improving coordination, fitness and teamwork skills. These initiatives aim to foster a lifelong love of sport while supporting students’ physical and social development both on and off the field.

Cumann na mBunscol

Our school is proud to participate in Cumann na mBunscol competitions and activities throughout the school year. Cumann na mBunscol provides students with the opportunity to represent their school in a wide range of Gaelic games and cultural activities in a positive, inclusive, and enjoyable environment.

Our school is proud to participate in competitions in both Gaelic Football and Hurling, with students from 3rd – 6th Class competing in the inter-schools competition.

Tag Rugby

Tag rugby offers a non-contact and fast-paced alternative that promotes inclusion and teamwork for students of all abilities. Tag rugby also promotes respect, fair play, and positive relationships both on and off the field.

Swimming

Students from 3rd – 6th Class complete a unit of swimming lessons in Birr Leisure Centre. Swimming is an important skill that promotes water safety and helps students gain confidence in and around water. These sessions improve fitness, coordination, strength, and endurance while also developing a deeper awareness and understanding of water safety.
